Fortinet NSE Certification Program Updates 2026

Fortinet has announced significant updates to its NSE Certification Program (Network Security Expert), effective July 15, 2026. These changes are designed to modernize the certification structure, align with real-world cybersecurity roles, and ensure professionals stay up to date with evolving technologies.

NSE Certification

Key Program Enhancements

Starting July 15, 2026, the NSE program will introduce:

  • Expansion from 5 to 8 certification levels

  • Introduction of industry-specific certifications

  • Continued focus on four core training tracks:

    • Secure Networking

    • Security Operations

    • Cloud Security

    • SASE (Secure Access Service Edge)

  • All certifications valid for two years

  • Updated certification and recertification requirements

  • Return of on-site practical exams for NSE 8

  • Expanded product coverage for certifications


NSE Certification Requirements by Level

The updated program introduces a structured progression model with active certifications required at each stage.


NSE 8 (Expert Level)

To achieve NSE 8 certification, candidates must:

  • Hold an active NSE 4 certification

  • Hold NSE 5 or NSE 6 certification

  • Hold NSE 7 certification (same track)

  • Pass the NSE 8 Core exam

  • Pass one NSE 8 Elective exam


Elective areas:

  • Secure Networking

  • Application Security

  • Security Operations


NSE 7 (Architect Level)

Requirements:

  • NSE 4 certification

  • NSE 5 or NSE 6 certification

  • Pass one proctored NSE 7 exam in the same track


Certifications include:

  • Secure Networking Architect

  • SASE Architect

  • Cloud Security Architect

  • Security Operations Architect


NSE 6 (Specialist Level)

Requirements:

  • NSE 4 certification

  • Pass one proctored exam


Examples:

  • FortiManager Administrator

  • FortiAnalyzer Administrator

  • FortiEDR / FortiDLP / FortiMail

  • FortiSOAR / FortiSIEM / FortiNDR

  • FortiCNAPP Analyst


NSE 5 (Professional Level)

Requirements:

  • NSE 4 certification

  • Pass one proctored exam


Examples:

  • FortiSwitch Administrator

  • Secure Wireless LAN

  • SASE & SD-WAN Core

  • FortiWeb / FortiADC / FortiAppSec


NSE 4 (Administrator)

  • Pass the FortiOS Administrator exam


NSE 3, 2 and 1 (Fundamentals)

NSE 3:

  • Complete course + pass exam

  • FortiGate Operator

NSE 2:

  • Complete course

  • Introduction to Next Generation Firewall

NSE 1:

  • Complete course

  • Cybersecurity and Cloud Fundamentals


Industry Certifications

New certifications outside the NSE level structure include:


MSSP Security

  • Requires NSE 4, NSE 5/6, and NSE 7

  • Pass proctored exam

  • Certification: MSSP Security Architect


OT Security

  • Requires NSE 4, NSE 5/6, and NSE 7

  • Pass proctored exam

  • Certification: OT Security Architect


Recertification Rules

All certifications now follow a 2-year validity cycle, with updated renewal requirements.


Key highlights:

  • Prerequisite certifications must remain active

  • Recertification options:

    • Complete a recertification assessment

    • Or pass the latest proctored exam


NSE 8 Recertification (Points-Based System)

To maintain NSE 8 certification:

  • Earn 200 activity points through:

    • Passing exams

    • Completing training

    • Participating in beta testing

    • Contributing technical content


Passing an NSE 8 practical exam renews all NSE 1–7 certifications.


Transition Rules (Effective July 15, 2026)

Fortinet will automatically map existing certifications:

  • FCX → NSE 8

  • FCSS → NSE 6 or NSE 7

  • FCP → NSE 4, 5, or 6

  • FCA → NSE 3

  • FCF → NSE 1 and NSE 2


All current certifications remain valid until expiration.


Important NSE 8 Updates

  • NSE 8 Core practical exam will be on-site only

  • Elective exams available on-site or remote

  • Introduction of NSE 8 Emeritus status

  • Enhanced benefits for certified professionals


New Courses and Exams

New content will be released by July 15, 2026, including:


Foundational Courses:

  • NSE 1 – Cybersecurity and Cloud Fundamentals

  • NSE 2 – Introduction to Next Generation Firewall


New Technical Certifications:

  • FortiADC / FortiAppSec

  • FortiCNAPP / FortiDDoS / FortiDLP

  • FortiNDR / FortiRecon / FortiDeceptor


Advanced Levels:

  • NSE 7 – Secure Networking Architect

  • NSE 7 – SASE Architect

  • NSE 8 – Core and Elective Practical Exams


Retired Certifications and Changes

  • Several certifications will be moved to new levels

  • Some exams will be retired or restructured

  • Legacy certifications (FCF to FCX) will no longer be issued after July 15, 2026
